V8 Cafe (Bugis Junction)

V8 cafe is located at a corner of Bugis Junction. Unless you have heard of it or happen to walk pass, chances are that you would not have seen it. Pop by for lunch during a weekday on 2 different occasions. Not too crowded. The most 70% occupied.

Lets start with the first visit.

V8 Cafe Menu (a)

V8 Cafe Menu (b)

As it was my first visit, the item that caught my eye was V8 Cafe Signature Dish. After all, the signature dish is the item that will be the differentiating factor.

As it was during lunch time, the dish comes as a set along with soup and drink (Ice Lemon Tea).

Soup of the Day

The soup of the day was Cream of Mushroom. Somehow what I notice was that it was half filled. Nothing comes free does it? =) It was a decent mushroom soup.

V8 Cafe Signature Dish $11.80

In the V8 Cafe Signature Dish, the main item was the grilled chicken which was accompanied by whipped potato, coleslaw and carrots (boiled).  The cheese did not overwhelmed the taste of the chicken. In fact, it complemented the taste. Inside, the chicken is tender and juicy. Outside the skin was crispy at the side. Thought that it was quite an average. But if it is the signature dish for V8 Cafe, then I will disagree as there is nothing special. You can get a similar item at other restaurants or western stalls in coffee shops.

Overall, service and ambience was good. If you find the background music too loud, you can request for the volume to be lowered. Food wise it was average.

Next will be on the 2nd visit. Again, similarly about 70% occupied.

Part of the Menu

Ordered the Chicken Cutlet $8.80. As it was lunch time, the meal came along with soup of the day and drink (Barley).

Soup of the Day

The soup of the day was Cream of Mushroom again. Was half-filled. This time the soup was not as decent as the previous time. It was quite salty.

Chicken Cutlet $8.80

The Chicken Cutlet was served with salad and onion rings. Just 3 pieces of onion rings which were oily. The chicken cutlet was even more oily. Not a decent dish.

Overall, service and ambience was good. But the food this time was way below average – terrible.

Honeymoon Dessert 满记甜品 (2nd Post)

My first post of Honeymoon Dessert can be found here.

On this second visit, I had a hard time thinking of what to eat as I had I was not won over by Honeymoon Dessert when I visited it the first time.

Banana Pancake

I ordered the Banana Pancake, if I remember correctly, it cost $2.50 or $3.50. Not fantastic and I am not really a fan of cream. Besides I felt that even if it cost $2.50, it was a too expensive (not value for money).

Menu

Mango in Vanilla Sauce with Thai Black Glutinous Rice (Cold) $4.50

One of my colleague ordered Mango in Vanilla Sauce with Thai Black Glutinous Rice. I tried it, and it was good. This is one dessert worth ordering. But for $4.50, I can eat a plate of chicken rice at a food court.

Looks like the Mango in Vanilla Sauce with Thai Black Glutinous Rice is so far the only dessert worth ordering in Honeymoon Dessert. And value for money is certainty a problem it has. I guess it has to do with the high rental at the area.

Honeymoon Dessert 满记甜品

What a weird name for a dessert shop. And this is not just any dessert shop, it is from Hong Kong. In Singapore, there is a outlet in Vivocity. Recently, about 1-2months back, Honeymoon Dessert open an outlet in Bugis. When you open an outlet in Bugis competing with the likes of Ah Chew and Ji De Chi, you have got to be sure you have differentiate yourself and sell real good dessert.

I have no idea about what the fuss about this dessert chain is about in Hong Kong. Well since it opened in Bugis, its time to find out for myself. As I work in the area, I notice that business in the outlet is brisk, seldom pack.

Menu

Thought that it was weird that the menu like it has been used for ages. Personally, felt that the menu was not user friendly, you will know what I mean when you flip the menu.

Menu: Grass Jelly in Vanilla Sauce with Green Tea Ice Cream $4.50

Grass Jelly in Vanilla Sauce with Green Tea Ice Cream (Cold) $4.50

I must say the saying that females always have space (in the stomach) for dessert is so true. The Grass Jelly in Vanilla Sauce with Green Tea Ice Cream was unique, never eaten something like this before. The green tea ice cream was awesome. With the first mouthful of this dessert, I love it, felt that the vanilla flavour, green tea and along with grass jelly was something which I have never try before. However as I eat/drink on, felt that the vanilla flavour was a tad too strong and it was too sweet. If you have got a sweet tooth, this is the dessert for you.

Menu for Glutinous Rice Ball

Menu: Glutinous Rice Ball in Red Bean Soup $2.80

Glutinous Rice Ball in Red Bean Soup (Hot) $2.80

Felt that the red bean soup was too dilute, but she say that it was just nice. Well as with every blog and everyone, taste is a personal preference and subjective.

Lily Bulb

A few pieces of lily bulb are added into the red bean soup. I have no idea how the lily bulb enhanced the taste in the dessert or was it more for medical/health purpose. All I know is that lily bulb has medical properties and it is used more frequently to cook soup or vegetable dishes.

Glutinous Rice Ball

What is the filling in it? It taste salty, find it weird. I prefer those with peanuts or sesame as it provide a better overall taste.

Well, I still prefer my Ah Chew for dessert compare to Honeymoon Dessert. Or did I choose the wrong items? If you know what is their best dessert item do tell me.
