HauZhouDao Food Shop 好粥到火鍋館 is a shop that specialises in steamboat buffet. The shop is located at Ang Mo Kio Central, at the Blk 712 where Sports Link is at. Have been here at least 10 times over the years.  This shop has been around since late 2005. Here’s a post on a recent visit, about 1month back when the weather was cold cooling. Went there on a Friday night, just after it rain earlier in the afternoon.

For Adult, the price is $15 Nett from Monday to Friday. During Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holiday, it is $16 Nett. No GST or Service Charge. The choice of soup are porridge, chicken and/or tomyam.

Outdoor

They have only a few tables indoor. Most of their sitting capacity is outdoor. Do not worry that it will be too hot after you start eating. This place is well ventilated and there are many fans at the ceiling and at the side of the wall. The only worry will be if it rains and there is a strong prevailing wind that blows the rain in. Or insects which are attracted to the warmth of the light after a heavy rain.

Chicken & Tomyam

Ordered the Chicken and Tomyam soup. Normally, we would order Chicken and Porridge. But this time decided to eat something spicy due to the cold weather. If you order just porridge, clay pot will be used instead so that the porridge will not be burnt.

Oh, the drinks are free flow too. Syrup drinks such as orange and lime. There is a wide variety of food available. After eating, you can go ahead and enjoy the ice creams. Everything here is self service and you can have as many servings as you want. But of course, take only if you can finish it.

One concern, I have is that the quality of the ingredients here might have deteriorated  (too strong a word) went down slightly. Particularly the mushroom, crabstick and corn. Other than that, I would say that the reasons why I keep coming back are because it is reasonably priced, good service, cozy environment. [the ingredients, the environment .. makes it feel as if I am eating at home =) ] I rate their service as good mainly because although they do not have service charge, they still provide service that would put outlets that charge service. They will keep refilling you soup base, assist you if you want the fan to be tilted to a certain direction, bring you more utensils when you require it. Basically, I think their mission is to make you feel at home and provide you with a world class service. Kudos for not charging service charge and provide such a good service.

Overall, I still find it value for money (cheap and good) and definitely will be back for more!

Tip Top Curry Puff (2nd post)

My 2nd post! The first post can be found here. Tip top is my favourite curry puff. In fact, I rate it still as the best curry puff in Singapore. Used to eat Old Chang Kee’s curry puffs long ago. But in the past 2 years, Old Chang Kee’s curry puff lost its appeal to me. Seems to taste as though it was factory made, not made individually.

The coffee shop has undergone a renovation. And tiptop has changed its outlook too. The sign board looks weird, maybe because I am too use to the old one. The whole place looks so white and bright. I prefer their old humble outlook.

Hmmm, sad to say the price of Tip Top Curry Puff has increased to $1.30 that is the same price as Old Chang Kee’s curry puff. But well, let see if its still as nice.

It seems that the curry puff has shrink sightly. When cost increase, the size and portion should remain the same and not smaller..  But well, the taste of it is still as delicious. Will not go into the details as I have already wrote about it in my first post. Still as good, still the best curry puff in Singapore. But please, if you increase the price, do not decrease the size.

Herbal Soup

Again another stall that I have been eating since young (upper primary)! As far as I know, this stall is quite famous with its fair share of appearance on newspapers and magazines. For some reason, I like herbal soup. Some people of my age hates them (especially the smell). I believe the first time I tried herbal soup was at this stall. After so many years, I still come back here for it and the owners are still look the same and as young! (must be the herbal soups)

Black Chicken Herbal Soup

I have nearly always ordered this whenever I come to this coffee shop except for the exception of once or twice when I order the turtle soup. More herbs underneath, hidden under the black chicken.

Note to myself: They used to add alot more herbals than this. But well, no choice. Its still what I considered one of the best. As I have been else where and drunk herbal soup, but outside standard of herbal soup seems to be adding of lots of salt with a few herbals which i dislike.

Again, I must emphasis most people who come to this coffee shop orders the herbal soup. Their business is good. And not to worry, the meal is delivered very fast as all they need to do is get your soup from the steamer.

The black chicken is tender and tasty even though it has been cooked for long period. And the taste of the herbs have sipped into the chicken meat. Its easy to bite. I love it when mine comes along with the chicken leg. The soup is concentrated with lots of herbals in it, its not salty. It is not diluted. Sadly, the rice is hard, but well I came here for the herbal soup not the rice. =)

I wish there was more of the black chicken meat. But well, overall it was definitely value for money. Hopefully, the standard remains the same as I will always be back for more.
