The Black Sheep Cafe

The Black Sheep Cafe – One chef… One Standard
That is what their website says. Heard about this place from her and then going on to google the place, our interest rose as we read how good it is. So since we are nearby and celebrating a happy occasion, let indulge in it!

Apparently, this is a French Cuisine cafe and the chef is an Indian.

If you are not familiar with this place, look out for the sign (see picture below).

Stepping inside…

There was already two groups of people there although it was only 630pm.

Their previous location was at Seletar, hence the picture above.

Menu Part 4

Notice in the menu, for starters, main course and desserts there are not many varieties as the chef only serves what he does best in and his signature dishes.

We ordered Baked Brie Cheese, two Duck Confit with Apple Roesti and a Flourless Chocolate Tart. After ordering, warm water was served. Do take note that this is fine dining, if you are in a rush, do not attempt to eat here. As the waiting time might be long.

Baked Brie Cheese (Pistachio crusted Brie served with Citrus Fruit compote) $12.50

another angle

This starter (Baked Brie Cheese) really wow us. The cheese was warm yet crispy! Coupled together with the chilled citrus fruits consisting of slices of oranges and pomelos, it was a fantastic start to our dining experience.

Duck Confit with Apple Roesti (Crisp roasted Confit Leg served with Tangy Mango Relish) $22.50

Mango Relish

Apple Roesti beneath the duck

The Duck Confit with Apple Roesti which has many garnered the praise of many bloggers online. I am not one who goes fine dining frequently, or eaten a duck confit before. But wow, even before it arrive, I could smell it literally. The Duck Confit had a crispy skin. Inside the meat was very tender. So tender that I wonder if it was really duck. However, it was slightly too oily for my liking.

The Mango Relish was so so. The flavour was overwhelming.

Apple Roesti, was good, so different from the roesti that you get to eat else where.  Needless to say I whipped the plate clean.

Flourless Chocolate Tart $8.00

After the main course was cleared we asked for the Flourless Chocolate Tart. It took ages to arrive about 20 to 30minutes. Quite an average dish.

We must be big eaters, as we were not full after the meal. Well I guess this happens during fine dining =).

Do take note there is No GST, No Service Charge. All prices are Nett. Do let the chef know if you are in a rush. If you want a quick meal this is certainty not the place.  And yes, do make a reservation if you are coming as this is a small yet cozy place with limited capacity.

Peperoni Pizzeria (Greenwood Ave)

Heard so much about this place. Managed to try it. Its quite ulu (far from the nearest bus stop) Best if you take a cab or drive there. Parking will be a problem during peak hours. Reservation is recommended during weekends.

Peperoni Pizzeria menu

If you choose large pizza, you can order 2 flavours.

Spot anything abnormal?

No, its not the smiling face or sad face. Smiling face means happy hour.
Take a look at the price of  Ice Water and Extra Ice. For more on this part, look at last paragraph of this post.

Something abnormal again. Can you spot it?

Crayons are provided along with paper for you to draw while you wait for the pizza. No, the pizza does not take long to arrive, about 10-15 mins upon ordering the pizza is out. Quite fast.

Large pizza (Fruitti Di Mare & Prosciutto Crudo Di Parma) $22

Large pizza (Pancetta & Suprema) $22

These pizza are made on the spot upon ordered.  The crust is thin and crispy with generous toppings. Quite nice!

Pancetta pizza

Pancetta pizza

The egg yolk flowing out. =) These pizzas were finished by two hungry people. Overall, we thought that the Fruitti Di Mare & Prosciutto Crudo Di Parma pizza was much nicer compared to Pancetta & Suprema pizza.

Two points to take note if we do go there again.
1) order 1st pizza wait for it to arrive and eat half way then order 2nd pizza so that the 2nd pizza will arrive nice and warm after we have eaten the 1st pizza.
2)  order 1 pizza and maybe 1 pasta?

This is certainty one of the best pizzas I have eaten. It is much better than those thick crust pizzas or even from places like Pizza Hut (which seems to have diversify from its core business to pasta..) And I would say the price of 22 dollars for a pizza from Peperoni Pizzeria may seems to be on the high end, but its worth it. Moreover, the prices in the menu are NETT! Which means there is no additional charges, when the bill comes it is just 44dollars (as we ordered 2 large pizza)

There is no service charge here. Yet the staff here are quite nice. When we ordered, they will explain to you if you need any help. Even with extra toppings when i wanted to add truffle toppings, they will advise you if the taste will clash and not just blindly add it for you and charge you.

Lastly, as mentioned above, regarding the price of Ice Water and Extra Ice. Its actually FOC. They are just trying to make a dig about places which charge for ice and plain water I think. You can request for warm water too at no extra cost.
