Tarafuku Japanese Buffet (313 Somerset)

Tarafuku Japanese Buffet is located at 313 Somerset and is part of the Tampopo Group. If you are thinking Liang Court, Shabu Shabu Black Pig, Tonkatsu Ramen and Matcha Chiffon Cake, you are on the right track!

Price List

Visited the restaurant on a Saturday for dinner. So per person it will be $27.80++. They have increased the price as of 18th Feb 2011. Previously, dinner on a Saturday night would have cost $25.80++.

The place was brightly lit decorated with japanese umbrellas hanging on the ceiling.

There is free flow shabu shabu for dinner only.

Hot pot for shabu shabu.

Thinly sliced, this was good! We ordered several helpings of this.

Selection of raw items to accompany the shabu shabu

Selection of vegetables, mushrooms, meat, fishballs and also prawns for the hot pot. Prawns were fresh! Also, there is miso soup at the extreme left of the picture.

Salad Selections

Very few selections for their salad section. The other half of the counter was for desserts. A must try item here is the potato salad.

Sashimi

They have Sashimi, Tuna and in the middle I think it is yellow tail.

Oddly and disappointedly, there was no alasakan crab! What happened to it? I have no idea, but earlier reviews clearly showed that there was alasakan crab. Ironically, with a price increase this item is missing..

Sushi

Chawanmushi

Chawanmushi was soft and smooth. I would have gone for more helpings of this if not for the fact that it was too salty.

Fried spaghetti and fried rice

Shishamo (middle) was not fresh.

The chicken wings (left) was delicious.

Tasty egg with runny yolk only downside was that it was cold.

Soft Shell Crab

You can order Soft Shell Crab which tastes great when it is hot. Ordered several servings of this.

Tofu

You can also order tofu too. Taste great, ordered extra helpings of this too.

Ramen

Ordered a small bowl of ramen. Can’t remember what ramen this was. It was average.

Dessert Selections

The desserts were average. No Matcha Chiffon Cake, maybe the top right was meant to be a small piece of the matcha chiffon cake. But it pale in comparison to the one I ate at Tampopo.

Ice cream

The green tea ice cream was good. The sesame ice cream (not in picture) was way too strong.

Lots of misses and few hits. The delicious items were the potato salad, chicken wings, shabu shabu and its selection such as prawns. Service wise, the staff were mostly foreigners, it was hard to communicate with them. One of them even took our bill to the next table and despite the person saying that he had a ready paid, the waiter could not understand. Overall, I find it a tad too expensive. Not sure if I will be back. If you do try it, let me know whats nice and also if the alasakan crab are being served.

U.d.d.e.r.s (Novena)

What is the meaning of udders? Well, it is a baglike organ containing the mammary glands, characteristic of certain female mammals, such as cows, sheep, and goats. In the case of cows, it where the milk comes from. Hence, in this context, Udders is a homegrown parlour that sells ice cream. The value propositions are that the ice cream is fresh, home-made (with no preservatives), healthy, natural and original. Moreover, they are famous for their uniquely flavoured ice cream, some of which are liqueured flavoured.

Menu

Colourful and cheerful menu that is a norm at all its outlets.

This is a cow udder water dispenser. What a way to emphasis on the word udder.

They have ice cream workshops too.

Bailey’s & Bourbon (Premium Range) $3.90

Bailey’s & Bourbon is a combination of  Bailey’s Irish Cream with bourbon. Yes, it is alcoholic and is a best seller. Thought that it was abit diluted in terms of flavour.

Waffle with Mao Shan Wang Durian (Connoisseur Range) and Awesomely Chocolate (Premium Range) $9.70

The waffle at Udders taste great when combined with ice cream! Mao Shan Wang Durian needs no introduction among the locals. Really taste like mao shan wang durian and it is also their best seller. Awesomely Chocolate, dark bitter chocolate.

Waffle with Tira-miss-u (Connoisseur Range) and Earl Grey (Classic Range) $9.20

Tira-miss-u, a combination of mascapone cheese, brandy  and cognac. Has the highest liqueur content among all the ice creams. Earl Grey, very intense earl grey after taste.

You can sample all the flavours before ordering the one you like. Udders’s flavours are so unique and special. Certainty a place to come to for dessert. Both Udders and Tom Palette are among my favourites, both are home-made, fresh and natural. The main difference I would say is that Udders sells liqueur ice cream. Currently, there are 5 Udders outlets.

Tom’s Palette

Heard about how good Tom’s Palette ice cream is since a few years back. At last, I get to try it for myself. Tom’s Palette is a traditional home-made ice cream shop. It seems that the owners have been churning out new innovative flavours regularly and the ice cream are made the traditional way, from scratch (using eggs, cream, milk, sugar).

Oh they have extended their shop, check out the newly renovated shop now. There’s much more sitting space available.

Even have ice-cream making workshop!

Salted Egg York ice cream!

You can try as many flavours as you like before deciding on the ones which you would like to order. I spotted Salted Egg York ice cream! This is unique and very innovative, have never tried something like that before. Hence, I asked to sample this flavour too! It really tasted like salted egg york, just that this time its the ice cream version! Something to unique to sample which I do not think you can find else where for now.

In the end, I decided to order these flavours

Granny's Favourite ice cream

Chocolate ice cream

Chocolate and Granny's Favourite

I ordered a medium cup with 2 flavours in it, Chocolate and Granny’s Favourite ice cream.

Chocolate ice cream had a strong chocolate / cocoa taste. It was thick and dark (bitter) too.  Not the diluted version of chocolate ice cream which you can find anywhere!

Granny’s Favourite ice cream had cookie dough in it which provided it with a variety of taste. It taste abit like milo ice cream too.

Surprisingly Tom’s Palette ice cream are quite affordable compare to other ice cream outlets. Moreover the ice creams are thick and are made of the real stuff. I will certainty be back to try more flavours. Am totally convinced that it is quite value for money. In fact, I think its on par with Ben & Jerry or even better!
